in front of the air conditioner, they are baking in the sun at DARE Field Day. Instead of running errands in town, they are running copies for a teacher or shelving books in the library. These volunteer services, coordinated by Jan Makela, are invaluable. To our numerous volunteers, we express our heartfelt gratitude.

Now to summer activities at RCES! We are preparing for our annual July summer school. Teachers have recommended students for this extra help and parents will receive a telephone call before July 1 if their child has been recommended to attend. Students entering grades three through six will receive first priority, then students in other grades will be added as space is available.

For the year round employees, summer work revolves around preparation for the 2000-01 school year. We are filling staff vacancies, ordering materials and supplies, ordering textbooks, updating handbooks, completing school and individual student schedules, assigning children to classes, registering new students, attending meetings and training sessions, filing state and federal reports, cleaning and waxing, repairing, the list goes on!

In conclusion, I would like to remind everyone to have some fun learning with your child over summer. Reading together is fun and worthwhile, planning a trip together offers opportunities for reading, math, problem solving and map skill development, keeping a journal can be relaxing and is fun to look back on in later months. Draw a picture and write about it. Write a story and illustrate it!

Practice addition and subtraction facts or multiplication, division facts in the car on the way to the beach. Build something. Whatever you do, make it fun and relevant to your child’s daily activities. The best you can do for your child is to share the joy of learning new things.

If you have a question, a need, or would like some specific ideas to help your child over the summer, just call the RCES office at 987-8259.
