A sometimes fractious October School Board meet-, ing followed a smooth presentation, by founding chairman Paul Gall, about the newly formed Rappahannock County School Sports Association (RCSSA). The organization's mission, said Mr. Gall, is "to benefit our youth by energizing and engaging the entire community in the promotion and ultimate success of our school system's athletic program."
Mr. Gall noted that it was especially important to have a strong athletic program in a small school system, and that the RCSSA would serve to support that goal through community outreach activities and by raising funds to acquire and maintain sports equipment and facilities. Among the areas targeted for support are the acquisition of uniforms and equipment, a weight training room, and an athletic fields concession stand and restrooms; the maintenance of the athletic fields; and the development of elementary grade level sports feeder programs.
The RCSSA will host a forum and introduction to steering committee officers at the high school auditorium on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m., and it will kick-off its fund raising efforts with a golf tourney on Oct. 21, and a "haunted house" in Axnissville on Oct. 27 and 28.
