Golf
Michael Fairbrother remains our sports highlight and top story. Last week at the Waynesboro Country Club, Michael continued his superb play in the Regional golf tournament. He shot an eight over par 80 in a tough field of District champions.
The winning score was 77 and Michael's 80 earned him the fifth place in the Regional Tournament and a berth in the single "A" State Tournament scheduled for this week.
Donn Hackney, the school golf coach said, "Michael's driving and iron play from the fairway and around the greens kept him near the top. If he had putted well, he possibly could have won the tournament." The State Tournament is a two-day, 36 hole affair that will be played over the Lonesome Pine Country Club at Big Stone Gap.
Each of the four Regions in the state may qualify two teams of four to six players. In addition, each Region can further provide up to six individual players who are not members of qualifying teams, but who scored high in their respective Regional tournaments. There will be over 60 golfers in the State Toumamenton Oct. 9 and 10.
Girls' basketball
The Lady Panthers had two games this past week. On Tuesday, they traveled to Manassas Park and recorded their first win of the season.
The Lady Cougars were three and nine going into the game, but winless in the District. Neither team could get much going offensively and the first quarter ended with the Cougars on top 4-2. The half ended with the RCHS squad down by one at 12-11.
For the first time this season, the Lady Panthers came out of the halftime intermission determined to take over the lead. Gwen Johnson had four of her 11 points in the third quarter to lead the way and the score was 23-21 with the Lady Panthers on top and the final eight minutes to go. The Lady Cougars refused to give in and the game stayed close until the last minute and a half.
