Most gardeners enjoy the beauty of iris each spring. Early varieties of iris begin blooming in late March, and the tall bearded iris bloom until mid-June. But occasionally an iris blooms again in the late summer or fall.
Now iris growers are propagating those "re-bloomers," selecting the most vigorous ones to cross pollinate for interesting color and shape. With the "re-bloomers" gardeners can now have iris blooming until frost. Jenny Spoon of Cross Junction, north of Winchester, has a nursery full of iris, re-bloomers and once blooming.
