As we approach election day, the voters of
Virginia are confronted with the decision of whom to choose in the race for Senate. Virginia has a long, proud history of sending statesmen to represent us in Washington, D.C., and statesmen in Washington are becoming a rare breed.
Webster defines this endangered species (statesmen) as: 1) one versed in the principles or art of government; especially one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping policies. 2) one who exercises political leadership wisely and without narrow partisanship in the general interest.
This definition accurately describes our present Senator, Chuck Robb. Chuck Robb has served us for 12 years as Senator and before that as Governor and Lt. Governor. Senator Chuck Robb has served us well.
While some of his fellow Senators have spent their careers jockeying for spots on weekend talk shows, Senator Robb has spent his time in his office studying the mountains of information which enable him to make informed decisions on the important issues he confronts as our Senator. Senator Robb also understands the concept of compromise and has practiced it throughout his political career. Compromise is essential to the successful functioning of our democratic process.
We must ask ourselves: Do we want a Senator who is going to work hard for Virginians or a Senator who will direct his efforts toward increasing his media exposure and advancing his political aspirations? Chuck Robb showed us he will work for Virginians and deserves our continued support.
