as "Kitty," died at her home early Wednesday morning, Oct. 4 after a period of declining health. Bom in Winchester on Dec. 4, 1912, Kitty Slater was the daughter of a prominent doctor, the late Dr. Fred Gochnauer and his wife Pearl Rose Gochnauer of Upperville.
She attended Stuart Hall preparatory school and Sweet Briar College.. She was married to the late George Robert Slater, and resided at West View until her death.
Kitty Slater led an ambitious career as a journalist and author. She was a former weekly columnist for The Washington Post spoils page and a contributing editor of Spur Magazine.
As a freelance writer, Kitty Slater had been published in The Thoroughbred Record and numerous other magazines and newspapers. She was a member of the Author’s Guild and the Author's League and is listed in Who's Who of American Women. She is best known for her book The Hunt Country of America published first in 1967, now in its revised Fifth Edition.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne Slater Coyner, and her son, George Nicholas Slater, as well as her four grandchildren, Margaret Nicholas White, Christian Bedford Coyner, George Fletcher Slater, and Catharine
