CHARLOTTESVILLE - ] Citing a conflict between >j "instinctive folk thinking" and *] modem law, a federal judge on Tuesday ordered a Sperryville couple to serve probation and *• pay $1,000 in fines for trafficking in bear parts. tZ
"We are not in the days when you could take game as you saw fit," Judge James H. * Michael Jr. told the couple, ,« Danny and Bonnie Sue 'X Baldwin. "We will never see. J those days again." *
But Michael acknowledged « that the bear trade once was a * fairly accepted part of rural X life, saying it remains something of an "inbred philosophy that exists in this general area and in this country." He also * noted that the couple had X* cooperated fully with authori- “* ties after their arrest. j
Prosecutor Jean Hudson, X* an assistant U.S. attorney, X) said she expects 20 to 25 inch- X viduals will be charged * because of the Baldwins’ cooperation, including their partic- < ipation in bear-trade sting operations. She estimates at least 100 federal charges will be filed.
