His and the efforts of others were rewarded when the Pope presided at a beatification ceremony at the Vatican in 1999. Bill attended the ceremony with family members including a nephew and his wife, Chuck and Marylin Furr of Hawaii, and Bill's housekeeper. Pilar, who became Bill's angels.
He once said to me as we approached the year 2000, "you know, the 1900's were my century. He personified our nations strength and growth, from the time he grew up on a mid-western farm and drove a horse and buggy over muddy roads with ruts so deep one could not get out of them to the present age of electronics.
It was a privilege to know Bill, whose life was marked by so many good deeds and acts of charity. Standing on the front steps of his beloved Avon Hall and looking out at the vista of the Blue Ridge, one will always feel his presence.
We do mourn at our loss of him, but his friends and neighbors should celebrate the life of this great human being.
