Christina, unmarried County Donegal sisters, the homecoming of their priest brother to 1936 Ireland after a long career in Africa, and Michael, Christina’s illegitimate son.
The five sisters struggle to survive, support their increasingly mentally befuddled brother and make a home for young Michael. Meryl Streep shines as the critical and sour Kate, a schoolteacher who loses her job during the course of the story.
Things go downhill from there—two sisters who knit gloves at home to eke out a few pence must leave home to seek work elsewhere, the brother dies and Kate is inconsolable after Rose and Agnes depart. But there are lovely moments in this poignant film. It's a real portrait of indigent country life in prewar Ireland. We’ve seen this film twice, and Herb enjoyed it both times.
