I am a Democrat. I want A1 Gore to win the presidency. I also
wanted Humphrey, Mondale, and Dukakis to win the presidency; but they didn't get enough votes and I accepted it, just as I will accept it if George W. Bush gets the votes this time.
However, I am astounded that some elected legislators in Congress, and in Florida, would even consider appointing Republican electors to vote for Bush if the courts allow the votes in Florida to be recounted and if Gore wins that recount. What kind of democracy, or republic, is that?
Both Republicans and Democrats are certainly justified in making their arguments to the Florida Secretary of State, and ultimately to the courts. Both sides want their guy to win. But I sincerely hope that neither side wants to win so bad that they will completely ignore the votes of the citizens of Florida and engage in partisan and unconstitutional end runs around the will of the citizens of Florida, whatever that will turns out to be.
