Daniel's Woodrell's novel "Woe to Live on." During American Civil War times tensions escalate and violence ensues.
The lovely, widowed Jewel (whose northern family is hiding some southern guys) gets to choose between many guys smitten by her charms. There's lots of violence, shooting and hanging, and one guy gets his arm amputated (Yuck, said Naomi!). In the end, Tobey Maguire gets the girl, probably because most everyone else is dead.
