On examining the park's soils, the team found that the network of fine roots near the surface was not significantly damaged by the fire. Most of the soils typically have large amounts of rock fragments on the surface. So, despite the bumoff of ground cover, "these factors combine to create a situation where a significant increase in runoff or erosion is not expected," Gasser said.
