A strong believer in education and a

generous supporter of our county.

Last week when we learned of the death of Mr.

William Carrigan our hearts were indeed saddened.

Our thoughts immediately turned to the Fourth of July instead of the current holiday season.

For years by mid-June Mr. Carrigan would phone • our office for his annual invitation to be printed on the front page inviting all the people of Rappahannock County to attend his annual Fourth of July celebration. He encouraged families to come picnicking, children to participate in games and for all county residents to enjoy the fireworks display on the hill beside the lake.

Mr. Carrigan was a caring, generous individual with a heart as big as any fireworks display one could imagine. Right before the fireworks display in July 1999, Mr. Carrigan gave the old Washington School to the Child Care and Learning Center. We understand that down through the years, he donated financially to various schools and organizations across this country as their financial needs would sometimes exceed their means.

In 1976 to celebrate the Bicentennial in Rappahannock, he was instrumental in organizing efforts to erect the time capsule beside the town Hall with artifacts and such information not to be opened until 2051.

It would be impossible to list the organizations and individuals Mr. Carrigan helped over almost a century. Men like Mr. Carrigan; gentle, strong, wise and giving are indeed a blessing to our community and the country in which we live. His memory will live within our hearts and in addition to our patriotic celebrations in July we will also pause for a moment to remember Mr. Carrigan and his generous contributions to our great county and country.
