MARCHING TO A DIFFERENT BEAT
Jazz funerals in New Orleans, a curious mix of solemnity and exuberance, are an example of cultural differentiation of a universal event. Traditionally, the band meets at the church or the funeral home and after the serv ice leads the procession slowly through the neighborhood. The mood is generally somber and the musicians indulge in virtually no improvisation. At the cemetery, after the interment ceremony, the band leads the procession from the gravesile without playing. At a respectful distance from the site, the lead trumpeter sounds two prepatory notes to alert fellow musicians. Then, the drummers begin to play the "second line beat " Solemnity is now shed in lavor ol more lively music and something bordering on a public celebration ensues.
