William M. Carrigan, a longtime Washington area businessman and philanthropist, died Monday, Nov. 20 at his home in Kensington, Md. He was 98 years old.
Mr. Carrigan grew up on farms in Iowa and Minnesota, He studied at Arizona State University and Catholic University.
Through his land and development activities, Mr. Carrigan learned of the Blue Ridge area of Virginia and especially enjoyed "Little Washington." In 1959 he purchased the old Bagley Estate whose home was known as "Avon Hall". He and his wife Ramona loved the property and its views. They enjoyed sharing it with their local and Washington D.C. area friends.
Locating a natural spring on the property prompted Mr. Carrigan to create a one-acre lake. It took this staunch patriot little time to then invite the entire community to the property for the Fourth of July. The Carrigans loved children, although they had none of their own.
