The Sheriff also asked the Board of Supervisors to consider funding a longevity supplement for deputies in the 2001-2002 budget. This supplement would provide salary increases to promote retention of “good people” that would, for example, amount to five percent after three years service, four percent after five years service, and three percent after fifteen and twenty years service. Sheriff Sherertz said that this supplement would save money by reducing the costly training-related expenses required when County deputies leave and are replaced by new personnel.
Dr. Gangel’s report
Schools Superintendent Dr. David Gangel, representing the School Board, requested that the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution supporting the efforts of Virginia CARES as the School Board did at its last meeting. Virginia CARES is a consortium founded to investigate public school funding issues in the Commonwealth, including the prevailing cost of education and the formula used by the State to fund localities, and it will make recommendations to the General Assembly’s Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee. Virginia CARES contends that public schools are grossly underfunded in Virginia, in part due to biases in the linear averaging and other methods used by the Commonwealth to estimate prevailing costs.
Dr. Gangel responded to a request at last month’s meeting by reporting that the amount budgeted in 20002001 for RCES lagoon repairs was $10,000. He also noted that engineering drawings for impending major repairs to that facility (in the proposed 2001-2002 budget at $273,000) were completed and
