Gourds were used long before houses were invented and they worked just fine. Just like any other outdoor item, they will require occasional maintenance, and a few may need replacing. A drawback to gourd use I have experienced is that a few young martins will occasionally fall from the gourd prematurely.
Another is that even though gourds are very hard on the outside, their walls are porous and do not transfer heat very well, which may contribute to bird loss during extremely hot weather.
If you presently have a martin house and still have not attracted martins, you might try hanging four or five large gourds from the bottom of it and see what happens.
