chairpersons can call meetings throughout the year. We all agreed that during our hectic legislative sessions there is no time for probing into the workings of the state agencies and that the caucus should press for oversight hearings periodically during the rest of the year.
This one concept, if implemented by our committees, would be the beginning of the first meaningful oversight of Commonwealth policies, programs and personnel in . Virginia's 400 year history, a very important idea to emerge from our "think tank".
During the time the General Assembly is resident in Richmond, our offices are deluged with mail. Much of the mail is from organizations and persons requesting funding for their projects, giving us their views on various bills or inviting us to receptions and dinners. Occasionally my mail bringssomething of concrete value for you. my constituents.
Last week I received a letter from the Virginia Optometric Association. In it, the executive director lamented that not enough families of modest means are taking advantage of free eye exams provided by optometrists who contribute to a national program called Vision USA. If members of vour family are in need of eye care, have no insurance and are of modest financial means, you might wish to call toll free to 1-800-766-4466 to determine eligibility. Your call must be made by Jan. 31.
