The Panther Wrestlers were also in the middle of exam week. It turned out to be tough going. Although losing all three matches, Rappahannock showed they were still wrestling above the expectation of a second year team. Winning a combined 25 percent of their matches, there were some upsets and many close matches.
Standing out for the evening were senior Garner Smythe (145) in beating Brentsville’s Peale who was third in the state last year; junior Jeremy Graves (215) went 2-1 for the evening, dropping a close 4-0 decision to number one ranked Schlegel of Brentsville; junior Jeff Scroggins (189) dropped a 8-7 decision to third ranked Yanchuck and senior Houston Haynes (152) dropped a decision to fourth ranked Orr of Brentsville.
Senior John Fedetta (125) was 2-1 for the quads with his only lose to number two Siler. Junior Jonathan Robinson (103) also went 2-1 for the evening. It was a tough set of matches, but the team acquitted themselves very well.
That weekend, Saturday, Jan. 12, the RCHS wrestlers traveled io Amelia High School for a nine-team tournament. Wrestling against a mixture of triple, double and single “A” teams, Rappahannock posted an impressive third place Finish. This Finish was especially difFicult considering Rappahannock was competing without sophomore Bill Tucker (140) and Jeff Scroggins (189) out with injuries. The Rapp grapplers were also missing a 275 heavy weight due to junior Henry Robinson’s departure from the squad after separating his shoulder two weeks ago.
All of the remaining eleven wrestlers placed in the top five, with five of those wrestlers in the championship round. Overall Finishes were sophomore Brian Brown (103) 3rd, Jonathan Robinson (112) 1st (with all pins), freshman Max Haynes (119) fifth, John Ferdetta (125) 2nd, sophomore Mike Weise (130) Fifth, sophomore Stuart Hensley (135) 5th, Garner Smythe (145) 2nd, Houston Haynes (152) 2nd, Eric Norman (160) 4th, Steve Von Fange (171) 5th and Jeremy Graves (215) 1st.
In addition to all the Varsity wrestling activity, a bunch of young “hard-chargers” that make up the JV squad have been traveling in all over to get wrestling experience. Under the guidance of assistant coach Phil Herzig, the JV grapplers participated in a Fauquier High School sponsored tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25.
