The Hampshire sheep acquired its name from the agricultural County of Hampshire in Southern England. It was in 1889 that the Hampshire Down Sheep Breeders’Association was established in Salisbury, England and is still active today.
In 1840 it was known as “The Hampshire Sheep Association” in the United States.
The appearance of a sheep is important only as it relates to maximum productivity, profit, and breed characteristic. In our area the Suffolk and Hampshire breeds usually place first at the fairs’ because of their growth rates and muscling. Each of these breeds or crossbreeds has a purpose. Some breeds are better raised for meat, others wool. Suffolk fleece is not a good quality wool, but the meat is the best.
My daddy raised sheep for many years, and I always love to see the sheep and lambs at county fairs.
The female sheep are ewes and weigh much less than the males called rams or “bucks”. The young lambs romp and play, creating their own activity whenever they’re not nursing or resting.
In addition to food, water, exercise and shelter there are a few preventive procedures necessary to keep sheep healthy.
First in the United States lambs usually have their tails cut off (docked) close to the tailhead for hygienic reasons (to prevent the accumulation of manure that would attract flies). Periodic worming is needed at least once or twice a year.
I always got the easy job, as each sheep was given medicine (we called it drenching). I marked each sheep that was medicated with paint, so they would not catch them again. It took two people to hold them and give them the right amount as it had to be measured.
