to The
Theatre
Tom Stoppard’s play, Arcadia is coming to The Theatre at Washington, Va. for two performances on Feb. 2 and 3.
Arcadia is the most brilliant and inventive play by Tom Stoppard, who is himself arguably the most brilliant and inventive of contemporary playwrights. He is also one of the most prolific: * Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Invention of Love, Shakespeare in Love, India Ink, Jumpers, and The Real Thing, are just a few of his many works.
London’s West End as well as Broadway and Hollywood have been sites for many of his successes.
The setting of Arcadia is a magnificent room overlooking the garden of an English copntry estate during the 19th and 20th centuries. While the location remains constant, the action alternates back and forth among events occurring there during the two centuries. Issues of science, art, history and landscape gardening abound and are interwoven , in a way which is both witty and challenging.
A review in Scientific American noted that “the verbal virtuosity in Arcadia rests on a respectful, even sympathetic, examination of the way modern science looks at the world.”
Arcadia will be produced and performed at the Theatre at Washington by the Georgetown University’s “Mask and Bauble Dramatic Society,” which is now in its 150th season, on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.
