Basketball
It was the end of the first round of Bull Run District competition. It was also bad news for Rapp basketball fans as the Varsity team was unable to win a game against any first round opponent. The week started at districtleading Clarke County as the boy6 basketball teams traveled there on Tuesday, Jan. 15 for a couple games against the Eagles. The Northern Virginia Daily byline on Wednesday morning said. Eagles Trounce Panthers.
Whatever it was, it wasn’t pretty, as the hosting Clarke County squad handed out an 89 to 52 defeat to the Varsity team. Juniors Kerry Grigsby and Gregg Jackson had 13 and 12 points respectively for the Panther squad. Senior Jeff Ritenour got in foul trouble early and wasn’t much of a factor, contributing only six points in the one-sided affair.
Clarke County remained unbeaten in the District and is ranked 3rd in the state in single “A” schools.
The JV game that preceded the main event was a good one with the Rapp JV team playing well-balanced game. Sophomore John Letsen led all Panther scorers with 18 points, but freshman Monte Christian stepped up with an excellent game of his own — adding 14 points and a team high 15 rebounds. The game was well played by both sides, but the Panther JV came up short, losing by the score of 61 to 52.
Both coaches were pleased overall, but as Coach Mike Leake said afterwards, “We just have to find a way to win on the road and realize that most teams are going to give us their best effort when protecting their home floor ... we’ll be ready for them when they come to Rapp!”
On Friday, dan. 18, the Madison Mountaineers came to town. Both games started poorly for the home teams, but the JV Panthers pulled out a thrilling victory in the last few minutes of their contest. Behind virtually the whole game, the Rapp JV tied the game at 36 apiece with just under three min[ utes left in the game.
For the rest of the game, lit was exciting basketball as [both teams tried to scratch • out a victory. In the end the I JV Panthers were the winJners 41 to 38. The home fans • were treated to a great game ! at the end. As Coach Gary ; Settle put it, “Our shooting • was the worst it has been all | year, but the kids offset that with great defense at the end of the game to come back and win.”
The Varsity contest that followed also started poorly, i but it never turned around. The Mountaineers pretty much just ran away with the game and the Rapp side was never in it after the opening tip. The final was 72 to 56.
The Junior Panthers also had a tough week as they hosted Fauquier County’s Middle School Champion, Warrenton Middle School. After losing to the Warrenton team on Tuesday, Jan. 15, the JP’s traveled to Marshall Middle on Thursday, Jan. 17, where
