The major proponents for a* later opening - members of travel boards and tourist attractions - said since many of their employees are student' workers, the earlier date would greatly affect the travel and tourist industry and hurt the overall economy of Virginia.
“Some of us are not concerned about the economic impact that this has,” said Delegate R. Steven Landes, RWeyers Cave. “This General Assembly and the parents we represent are concerned about their families. These kids and the families need the addition-, al time before the summer* ends to have that time to spend! together.” i
Delegate William Ki Barlow, D-Smithfield, also does? not support the legislation. , ;
“The parents that I’ve talked to don’t want school tci start before Labor Day," Barlow said. “They want td have some family time. Once school starts and is sort of set in motion, you’re back to work and back to school and vaca-! tion is over. Until I see a groundswell of support front parents and others wanting this Tm not really prepared to vote that way.”
