RICHMOND- It won’t be long before a Senate subcommittee panel begins studying the bill that would require children ages 12 and younger to wear flotation devices while in motorboats.
“This is a motherhood and apple pie kind of piece of legislation,” said bill patron Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth.
The measure stipulates that the person operating the motorboat would be responsible for ensuring that all children aboard wear flotation devices unless they stay below deck or remain enclosed in cabins.
Before sending the bill to one of their subcommittees, Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources committee members discussed requiring children to wear flotation devices in kayaks and canoes, not just in motorboats.
Committee chairman Sen. Charles R. Hawkins, RChatham, said he sent the bill to the subcommittee so it could discuss the necessary age requirements for the children.
