Volleyball
The Volleyball teams squared off here at home against the Lady Eagles from Clarke County on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The game was a battle between the two first-place teams in the District, as each had suffered one lose to date. It was an exciting contest, as both squads knew the winner would be alone on top.
The Lady Panthers won an exciting opening game 15 to 11 and seemed on the verge of taking over sole possession of first place in the District. But the Lady Eagles had some different ideas. Unable to execute effective first touch passes to their setters, the Rapp girls watched their chances for a first place evaporate before their eyes.
The Clarke County girls were a lesson in bump, set, spike as over and over again they returned the ball to the Panther side, where mistakes plagued the offense. In the end it was the Lady Eagles walking out of the gym in sole possession of first place. They lost the opener, but came back to win the next two games 15 to 9 and 15 to 10 to win the match.
Prior to the Varsity contest the two JVs squared off. The JV girls from Rapp seemed determined to find a way to lose their opportunity to win. Winning the first game, then losing the match has become an all too familiar pattern for the JV squad. True to form, the JV Lady Panthers won the opener 16 to 14, then lost the next two 15 to 4 and 15 to 11.
Whatever the Clarke County team did to the Lady Panthers stuck in their travel bags, because they carried it to Madison two days later. The Lady Panthers had beaten Madison twice before this season, but the team seemed to forget that on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Lady Mountaineer gym. It wasn’t even close — 15 to 11 and 15 to 1 and the Lady Panthers got back on the bus. What had seemed so possible two days before — sole possession of first place, a first-round bye in the District tournament, guaranteed berth in the Regional “B” Playoffs — all gone, vanished.
The Varsity is back to fighting for a third place finish and a high seeding come district playoff time. Coach Suzie Zylonis tried to appear upbeat after the Madison match by saying, “Of course I’m disappointed with the outcome, because I know we can beat these teams. We were off our game... I’m sure we’ll get it back against Manassas Park this week.”
The JV team also lost at Madison, no details were available at press time.
