The young actors who portray the hole diggers are refreshingly believable; they look and sound like kids you know. Shia LaBeouf as Stanley gives a remarkably poised performance, while Khleo Thomas repeatedly steals scenes without uttering a word as Zero, the little kid whom bullies mistreat at their peril.
Sigourney Weaver hams it up as the evil camp warden, whose targets include the camp counselor played by Tim Blake Nelson. Many other familiar faces appear, including Patricia Arquette, Dule Hill, Eartha Kith and Los Angeles Lakers’ star Rick Fox.
“Holes” is a solid adventure story, which also imparts worthy lessons on racial harmony and helping others. The film is rated PG and contains some violence, obscenity and intense thematic elements. Run time is 111 minutes.
