The car was found abandoned in front of the Warrenton Bowling Alley. Thorpe’s body was discovered on the northbound side of U S. 17, just outside the Warrenton towm limits.
Thorpe, a 1986 graduate of Fauquier High, had been shot multiple times with a .25 caliber handgun.

The sitting sheriff, Ashby Olinger, said at the time that Thorpe had not been “sexually assaulted nor did it appear she had been robbed.”
Higgs said that DNA evidence in this case has been resubmitted now that the technology has advanced.
According to the Sheriffs Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation profilers believe Thorpe’s assailant was most probably a white male who lived in Fauquier County, and was probably someone she knew.
