Sperryville fire department
awarded grant for fire truck
The Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department Inc., has won a federal grant cc $225,000 towards the purchase of a new pumper fire truck. Gov. Mark R. Warner’s office has annbunced.
The money comes from a federal program under the Homeland Security Department to assist local communities keep their emergency equipment in good shape.
Fire Chief Richie Burke said he had applied for this grant over several years, but was finally successful. He said the village expects the actual engine will cost some $350,000 and the rest will be made up by the incorporated fire company through fund- raising.
He said the engine will be designed and built to custom specifications reflecting the area’s needs.
In addition to the county, the pumper will be used in Shenandoah National Park and in regional fire fighting situations.
Richie credited Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor, R-7th, for assisting Sperryville in obtaining the grant.
