account of John R. Morey to give us an idea of the events following. Morey was a member of Custer’s Michigan Brigade. Here is what he recorded.
“Camped in Amissville, the Wolverines restocked haversacks and feedbags from the surrounding countryside as well as from their supply wagons. When pitching camp in that rich farming region, Custer had been deliberately contradictory in instructing everyone. He told them to “be sure not to steal anything, but take all you want.”
