Nieters also feels that it is important his players know the value of hard work. “I want my players to know that hard work pays off both on and off the court,” he says. “I don’t like us to face teams that don’t challenge us. I ! prefer us to have to work hard and earn everything we get.”

Anna Kreyling, who led the district in blocks and kills last year, is returning to the team, and Nieters expects Mattie Nawrocki to put up comparable numbers this year as well. “We still have room to grow,” he noted, “but if the players work as a whole, they will be greater than the sum of their parts.”

Without the support of the junior varsity team, however, Nieters says the varsity program would not be where it is today. “We have a really strong JV program coached by Jackie Settle,” he says, “and she deserves to be recognized for her support of and dedication to the varsity program.”

The team won a scrimmage last week against Spotswood High School, 4-1. Their next match is Aug. 31 against Luray.
