The district meet is being held on Rappahannock's home field this year, which Strand hopes will help the team earn a trip from there to the regional meet. Last year, three of the top five teams in the state came from the Bull Run district.
Rising junior Kevin Martin has been touted as one of the team’s strongest runners. “He was one of the top runners last year as a sophomore, and has a good chance this year to go to both regional and state meets,” said Strand.
What it all boils down to for Strand is this: not only does he want his runners to improve their personal best times, but he wants them to do it while making everyone else on the team better runners as well. “I’d like to help them make a difference in their own lives, as well as the lives of their peers,” he said.
The cross country team’s first meet is Sept. 1 against Luray High School.
