Harvey became an entrepreneur like a lot of other people have over the years: He was laid off from his former job and he had to do something else.
“I worked for IBM in a technical field for 21 years,” he said. “Then I got laid off and I decided to do something other than working for somebody else. We actually went to the franchise fair in D.C., and there was this huge crowd around the podium that happened to be Cold Stone Creamery.”
Harvey and Rusch investigated the opportunities offered by the company and were impressed.
“They’re very helpful in getting you started,” Harvey said. “They stand right behind you.”
Still, there were times when the owners’ enthusiasm was tested.
“We got an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan and that took a long time to do,” Harvey explained. “The SBA and Cold Stone didn’t like the demographics of Warrenton at first. Then they looked farther and they decided to give me a shot, but the Cold Stone rep said that he’s a gambler, and he wouldn’t do this.”
