Traveling the backroads of Rappahannock County with two preschoolers, 10 first graders, 10 second graders, 11 other elementary schoolers and 15 high schoolers at 7:30 each morning could prove to be a challenge to most, but for local bus drivers, it is, for the most part, a pleasure.
“I just love kids,” said Bertha Jacobs who has been driving a school bus in the Viewtown area for the past five years.
Ask drivers in most school districts and you will not find them saying it is a joy to transport children back and forth from home to school. In fact, most counties are in short supply of bus drivers.
However, Rappahannock county is not an average school district. With 22 full time drivers and five substitutes, Timmy Beam, transportation supervisor, does not have a shortage of drivers this year.
