Before dawn and with bright police lights flashing, a 16-car caravan turned into the parking lot of K-Mart in Front Royal on Saturday.
One could easily imagine Santa arriving in his reindeer sleigh and hear the familiar refrain, “Here Comes Santa Claus, Here Comes Santa Claus,” as Rappahannock County Sheriff Department deputies and state troopers escorted 42 joyous children Saturday morning on a shopping spree that has become a tradition in the county.
Nine years ago, Capt. Jeff Brown, head of the D.A.R.E. program at the Rappahannock County High School, took on one of the most rewarding assignments of his career—organizing an annual “Shop with a Deputy” program of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department to provide children from needy families in the county the opportunity to shop for Christmas. He’s been doing it ever since.
