Today’s bookselling environment is highly competitive. Challenges arise from many sources- not only from other bookstores, but also from non-book outlets such as mass merchandisers, warehouse clubs, supermarkets and the internet.
The Old Sperryville Bookshop has faced all of these as well as challenges of a different sort including a lightning strike, a propane leak, a plague of flies, a charging deer, a cat roundup, and Birds! Birds! Birds!
The first year
