Program began in 1995
Started in 1995 with only five children, the program has grown to 42 children who are given the opportunity and joy of shopping with a deputy for “what they want to buy for themselves.”
In addition to those who took part in the shopping spree, the program now expects to help an additional 40 children with new resources and contributions. There is a rough guideline that suggests 70 percent of the children’s $100 gift certificate be used for clothes and another 30 percent for whatever pleases them, including gifts for their loved ones.
In addition to the gifts chosen by the children for themselves, and gifts for their families, Capt. Brown initiated a “food box” for each family participating in the “Shop with a Deputy” program. And to help stretch their dollars as far as possible, K-Mart made extra discounts available for this program as well.
Sheriff Larry Sherertz thanked the volunteers at K-Mart who raised funds of their own to provide “gift bags” of various fun things for the children: “This is the highlight of our year. We wouldn’t miss it for anything. And we are grateful to all the volunteers everywhere who made this possible.”
