Engineer Herb White ofWW & Associates estimated that the total cost of Washington’s new wastewater plant would be $4 million dollars at the December 14 meeting of the Washington Town Council. White’s estimate is intended to account for all the work associated with the project, including the expense of laying pipe under Washington’s streets.
Council member Claudia Mitchell asked White to prepare a more detailed breakdown for the $4 million dollar estimate, and to include funds already spent by Washington on the project. The council also wants White to present a comparison between the work in his most recent estimate and the Preliminary Engineering Report submitted back in May that the town had been using as a guide. While the work for the new plant is expected to be extensive, Council members and at least one member of the public, Washington resident Di^ne Bruce, expressed concern about how the town would pay such a high price.
According to Tbwn Clerk Laura Dodd, “the town is beginning to discuss that.” From the beginnings of the wastewater project, the Tbwn Council has indicated that they would try to finance the cost of the improvements, offsetting (lie fee with the sale of valuable town property Avon Hall. The Washington mansion was originally purchased for roughly $1 million dollars, several years ago, and it is expected to have gained in value.
Christmas in Little Washington
The council expressed intense satisfaction with the December 4 Christmas in Little Washington parade. Washington Mayor Eugene Leggett, who rode in the parade seemed to have particularly enjoyed the proceedings. “It was a heartwarming, delightful experience.. .it made me think of a Norman Rockwell painting all spread out. Where did all the people come from?” said the Mayor afterward.
