Rappahannock this week, sending absenteeism soaring at the county’s public schools and forcing cancellations of classes until January 5. Superintendent William Bloomer announced on Tuesday, December 16, that schools would close that afternoon and remain closed until the regularly scheduled end of Christmas holidays on January 5. The high school choral concert on December 18 and the elementary school spaghetti diner and musical program on December 22 will be rescheduled, according to Dr. Bloomer. All other school activities and programs with the exception of the holiday basketball tournament at Page County High School on January 2 and 3 have been canceled or postponed, the superintendent said. He attributed his decision to close a week early to education and health problems caused by high absenteeism from the flu. By Monday afternoon, 308 children— 46% — of the elementary school’s enrollment of 667 were out, the overwhelming majority with the flu. ...
