Christmas brings families together, and contrary to the party line, this is not always a fun thing. I’m not saying it’s not good, it’s just not always fun. For every heartwarming minute of cuddly kids playing with fire trucks, there’s inevitably four hours of forced conversation with your fifth cousin’s second husband. Happiness at seeing long lost relatives is soon replaced by the awareness that you will have to repeat the same tired monologue about your job to everyone in the room, and no one will be interested.

Tb be clear, I'm not humbugging here. I like eggnog, pine trees, and immaculate conception as much as the next caroler. I love to give, receive and wassail. It’s the stuff in between that’s a drag. In these situations, I believe that it is my duty to save Christmas, and I do this by ignoring all that boring stuff and reading. I hide somewhere and read books until someone older and more powerful than me says I can go home. Is this cowardly and antisocial? Probably, but sometimes that’s the only defense against closetalking great uncles that smell like they eat rum balls with a snow shovel. Besides, this is a great way to meet new books, if
