Balance: that most difficult of life’s challenges, never seems more in disarray than at this time of year. What is the true meaning of the ‘holidays’ and what should we call them? How terrible it is that commercialization has taken them over. How will everything that needs to be completed be accomplished before the big day?
Perhaps no other time of year best reflects the accumulated effects of the march of history on human customs and traditions, at least for much of-the western world. The rush of lights, greens, presents, food, drink, and religious celebrations is the amalgam of thousands of years of practice and revision, much of it fascinating. Some secular aspects of our traditions are thousands of years old. Christian religious customs are an interesting combination of formal biblical texts mixed with secular practices over two millennia.
