Assessor Chris Parrish later explained that he sees “two types of appeals; goodness of heart, where this isn’t any real argument and slight error, or occasionally blatant stuff such as one instance Parrish recalls where the house measurement was simply wrong.
Quietly frustrated
No one wanted to speak on record, but there is some frustration within some members of the BOA about the general demographic and market trends that are slowly pushing many long-time local families out of the area. Other members agree it is a regrettable trend, but feel the task' of the assessment is only to accurately determine fair market value of property, .and that these trends are out of their jurisdiction and control.
One assessor was also concerned about the relatively small number of property sales being used as benchmarks to figure the value of all the surrounding properties.
Others were more philosophical; it would be nice to have more sales for comparison, but if the land has not been changing hands on a large scale, the assessment must use the evidence there is. And land sales both in and around the county support the degree of inflation in thus years assessment and the overall accuracy of its conclusions.
Next week we will'look at how Land Use taxation, conservation easements and tax credits interact with the assessment and tax rates to affect your wallet and the county budget.
