time rival, VicePresident Hubert Humphrey, who would lose to Richard Nixon. The Vietnam War went on for seven more years.

I finally got to know Gene as a friend and Rappahannock neighbor when my wife Joan and I opened the Old Sperryville Bookshop. Gene would come to the shop, get a cup of coffee, and sit down to tell me his political stories and try out his latest one-liners on the political scene. He was a great storyteller, never at a loss for an anecdote or a joke. His many books were best-sellers at the shop, and he packed the house one evening when he came to tell his stories and read his poetry.
