The Times-Democrat, a weekly broadsheet newspaper with an audited paid circulation of 14,400, celebrated its 100th birthday this year.

The Emersons founded the Fauquier Citizen, now with a paid circulation of 8,600, in 1989, and the Culpeper Citizen with Charles Bowles in 2003. Both are weekly tabloids. The Culpeper Citizen is now1 delivered to 19,300 households.

Times Community Newspapers acquired the TimesDemocrat in 1974, and will now publish 19 newspapers in adjoining counties in the Northern Virginia region. With the acquisition of the Citizen newspapers, the company will employ about 300 people.
