That would come much later, when we both wound up in Rappahannock County. But we had a connection in our roots. As a boy growing up in Minnesota, Gene’s home state, I watched his career develop in the House and then the U.S. Senate. He was a different kind of politician, intellectual, witty, literate, somewhat aloof, not prone to suffer fools gladly (as politics virtually requires), more the college professor that he had been than the politician he became.

Robert Kennedy to challenge incumbent President Lyndon Johnson for the Democratic nomination in 1968, McCarthy answered the call.
