Driven by a desire to help people and educate those suffering from common vein diseases, a Rappahannock County doctor is making a state-of-the-art varicose vein treatment available in Culpeper.
In March, Dr. Eric Larssen opened a vein practice to perform minimally invasive, outpatient treatment for varicose veins.
Approximately one in five adults have some form of vein disease, the Gid Brown Hollow resident said.
One of the most common forms of vein disease, varicose veins are caused by faulty valves that allow blood to flow away from rather than toward the heart. This condition causes bulging and pooling of blood in the veins and, if left untreated, can cause pain, swelling and ulcerations in the leg.
Larssen has used his experience training under former American College of Phlebology president Dr. Craig Feied to start his own practice on East Davis Street. The practice offers a procedure called endovenous laser therapy, which uses ultrasound and laser technology to treat varicose veins.
Varicose veins occur in surface veins, which act as reservoirs for times when more blood is needed, such as during exercise. But people can live without surface veins - and are better off without them if they are varicose and causing pain.
