Dan Manzo is opening a new deli/take-out/coffee shop in the kitchen at The Clopton House. Folks in the town and county are thrilled as the news makes its way around. Dano DeLucca’s is scheduled for a spring opening and Dan plans on having ice cream as well. The courtyard will be set up with tables and chairs and Manzo hopes to restore a real “town community feeling.”
The Town of Washington is the center of the county as far as government offices are concerned. It houses lots of real estate offices and art galleries, a five-star restaurant and the very comfortable Country Cafe as well as several upscale bed and breakfast facilities. It’s short on retail shops and sidewalks and places to park, but it packs a lot of history on its ancient shoulders and the town officials are careful when planning growth, so that its intrinsic character will not be lost. The addition of Dano DeLucca’s is just what the town needs, particularly since Sunnyside Market closed its doors several months ago. Now, as residents and visitors tour the town, they’ll have another choice when it comes to a cup of coffee and a sweet thing or a sandwich and soup combination.
That’s a good thing. Artist Peter Garon left for warmer climates and a change when he closed his doors at the end of last year and moved himself and gallery to Florida. Garon left behind not only the memories of his beautiful art, but his sun-filled studio and gallery. But not for long. Flint Hill artist Cory Caulfield has long admired this space and now it’s hers. Caulfield, like Garon, will take advantage of that wonderful light as she creates her own studio space. And, as for the gallery, there are already paintings by local artists hanging there. Caulfield is planning a major opening in the spring, but she’s there off and on getting settles and her artwork, as well as that of others, is already brightening the walls. That is a good thing. Sunnyside Market, while not offering muffins, the New York Times and colorful bouquets of flowers, will house offices for Joseph Meuse. They should be ready very soon and you can stop by and say hello. The Hair Gallery on Main Street had a visitor on Wednesday, Bobby Briggs, a hair stylist fro Alexandria, just happens to have clients that live out here and so he will be making regular visits. That is a good thing. Dano DeLucca’s, Cory Caulfield’s Gallery, Joe Meuse’s new digs and now a visiting hair stylist. The Town of Washington ,with its history, its quaint streets and its precious people also need battery charger and energizers. New places and people will do that. That is a good thing.
