Head Varsity Football Coach Kemp Pullen resigned from his coaching position, citing frustrations with the path that the football program is taking. “I’m just looking at the facts and the odds are stacked against us,” he said flatly adding, “Joe Gibbs couldn’t even do it.” Pullen wanted the Rappahannock County High School Athletic Department to pull the football team out of the Bull Run District and play independent schools, after what he had seen on the field during the last season. Pullen said that the current scoring average of the team is 43-5. “Each year our team gets smaller and the opposing team gets bigger, Pullen said. “We can’t compete with these kinds of teams any more.”
Rappahannock High School Athletic Director J.D. Almond said that the Athletic Department is looking for a new coach who will be willing to tackle the difficult position that the football team is in. “Kemp feels that he can’t be competitive enough right now with the way things are,” said Almond. “I praise him for starting us off right and doing a great job.” Pullen said that the football programs days are numbered if the school continues to play in the district. “I don’t know how the program will survive, when only 21-24 players show up next year,” he stated. “It’s a shame that it took 42 years to get a football program and it will only take about seven years to get rid of it.”
