Last week, the Rappahannock News recounted how RCPS Superintendent Bob Chappell traveled to Richmond to explain to the General Assembly’s Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education why Rappahannock County should be getting a larger share of state education dollars. For almost ten years, Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, has helped to address the gap between the needs of our public schools and the available dollars. Headwaters provides independent support for our public schools by increasing community involvement in education and attracting new resources, both financial and human. Our volunteers, board members, and staff work closely with families, faculty, and other organizations to develop creative ways to improve education and provide kids with what they need—to learn, to succeed, and to successfully negotiate the path to higher education. This column focuses on some of our major initiatives to keep you informed, engaged, and, we hope, inspired.
Starfish
Last year saw an increased emphasis on the arts for the Starfish Mentoring Program, as mentees between the ages of 6 and 18 learned photography from Paula Endo, created journals based on Julie Portman’s Life Stories Workshops, and performed in the Ki Theatre Christmas Pageant. This year, the focus on the arts continues, with an offer from Charlene Duiguid to provide mentees with acting lessons. In April, a veiy special trip to Castleton’s Chateauville Theatre is planned, where mentees will be the guest audience for an extraordinary event—a dress rehearsal of New York Philharmonic Director Lorin Maazel’s new opera. Afterwards, mentees will attend a reception where they will meet the members of the Young Peqple’s Orchestra.
For the second year in a row, the Rappahannock News and our other business and community partners demonstrated their support for the Starfish Mentoring Program and National Mentoring Month by featuring a story about the program, photos df mentoring pairs, and the “Starfish Stamp of Support” (see the Rappahannock News, January 4, 2007).
