I had the pleasure of spending a morning this past week with Pat and Charlie Sher of Amissville. They are the owners of the Lazy S Llama Ranch on Waterford Road. Many of you have probably slowed down as you drove by to look at these beautiful creatures! And right now there are 43 of them there to look at!
It takes only a few minutes into the conversation with Pat and Charlie to figure out that Charlie is the business guy and that for Pat, it’s all about the llamas! This makes them pretty much the perfect couple to run a business that’s all about llamas.
Their llama adventure began back in 1995. They were relatively new to Amissville at the time and decided they needed to make use of the bam and fencing that had come with their new home. They weren’t sure how they wanted to use it or what kind of animals would suit them when one day they came upon an open house at a llama ranch in Rixeyville. It was immediately clear to both of them that llamas would soon be taking up residence at their home. They bought four of the animals on the spot agreeing to take delivery once they had the facilities ready. The four included three bred females and one gelding so they knew they’d soon have babies, known as crias, as well. Since Pat and Charlie were so new to llamas it’s fortunate that the animals are generally pretty self-sufficient when giving birth. The babies weigh about 25 lbs and are definitely cuddly.
Their herd has grown over the years both from their breeding efforts and from new acquisitions. Those acquisitions include 8 llamas they rescued two years ago. And each and every one of these animals is special to Pat. Llamas for her are truly a passion! Every animal is named and she knows them all. I was lucky enough to have her take me out to meet some of these unique animals.
I’ve got to tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a 300 lb. llama shove you because you’re not paying enough attention to her! I definitely went back to rubbing her back! Mind you, llamas this affectionate are not necessarily the norm. But Pat and Charlie do work to make
