Letters — A, B, C — typically indicate a student’s performance in school. But for the high schoolers in Elizabeth Blubaugh’s leadership development class, success this past week could have been measured by the truckload.
The students in the leadership class launched a recycling project at Rappahannock County High School, collecting about 4,800 plastic bottles and containers over the course of four days.
On Nov. 15, America Recycles Day, three truck loads of recyclables were dropped of at the Flatwood recycling center outside of Washington.
Blubaugh’s class, which is new this year, teaches leadership skills. One component she addresses is problem solving.
“I suggested we start looking at a real problem,” Blubaugh said.
And she saw room for improvement in the school’s recycling program.
“We already do some recycling here, but we thought we could really step it up,” Blubaugh said.
